Mid Devon Leisure staff become friends of dementia

Staff from Mid Devon Leisure attended a Tiverton Dementia Alliance 'Dementia Friends Session' to help promote a better understanding and awareness of dementia amongst the local community and to help reduce the stigma that can be associated with the condition.

As part of this initiative, Dementia Friends Champion and Alliance coordinator Sue Moore has been organising Dementia Friends Sessions for businesses, organisations and individuals, such as the one recently attended by staff from Mid Devon Leisure and held at Exe Valley Leisure Centre.

Volunteer police cadets become Dementia Friends

20 Volunteer Police Cadets from York and their leaders have become Dementia Friends thanks to an Alzheimer’s Society initiative. North Yorkshire Police have signed up to the Dementia Friends scheme to help officers, staff and volunteers become more dementia aware.

To qualify as Dementia Friends, the cadets took part in a dementia awareness presentation where they learned key facts about dementia, performed tasks and were asked to consider how they could turn their understanding into action in their local community.

Council staff aiming to become dementia friends

West Sussex County Council staff are aiming to become Dementia Friends and are hoping to inspire residents to follow suit. As one of the county’s biggest employers, the county council’s new staff initiative has been revealed around the same time as the launch of a new dementia friendly online directory in Worthing.

Dementia Friends champion talk at Crediton and Area branch meeting of Devon Senior Voice

MARION Pollinger, Dementia Friends champion gave a talk to the Crediton and Area branch of Devon Senior Voice about her work.
She also explained what dementia was, how it was diagnosed and the many ways we can all help people affected by dementia to live more fulfilled lives in the community.

At the end of her talk she handed out information about becoming a Dementia Friend, which includes a variety of options of how people can become involved to help alleviate the misconceptions about this disease.
