The warm hand of friendship

An energy efficiency scheme in North Shields is spreading its warmth into the community as it makes new friends. Staff at Warm Zone have signed up to become Dementia Friends to help them better understand the condition and support customers and others who are affected by it. They have also urged all of their contractors to join the scheme, which is run by the Alzheimer’s Society.

Become a 'Dementia Friend' in Tamworth and help support others

Understanding a condition such as dementia can be daunting, but a community group in Tamworth is educating residents with a friendly approach, SAM JONES reports.

I, like many others, know very little about the extent of what this disease can do to the human body, and how it can make the simple tasks in life a lot more difficult. So that's why I attended Community Together CIC's first Dementia Friends meeting last week in the Castle Grounds – to increase my knowledge of this condition that affects over 800,000 people in the UK alone.

75 Bolton pharmacies in bid to become more dementia-friendly

PHARMACIES across Bolton have become the first in the region to introduce a new scheme making them more dementia-friendly. A new framework developed by the Greater Manchester Pharmacy Local Professional Network was launched at 75 of the town's pharmacies last week, and will be rolled out across the area in the coming months.

The scheme outlines a variety of ways to give greater support to dementia sufferers, such as providing reminder charts to help people take their medication at the right time and having staff sign up to become Dementia Friends.

Lewes group joins dementia friend scheme

A new scheme to make Lewes dementia friendly was held in the town hall last week as part of a national campaign to improve understanding of the condition.
A group of six residents attended a free one-hour information session at Lewes Town Hall run by dementia friends champion Cllr Esther Watts. Cllr Watts as part of the dementia friendly Lewes initiative.

Today's schoolchildren are the Dementia Friends of tomorrow

TO an average 14-year-old, the word 'dementia' would probably mean very little. The reality of living with the condition is a world away for most teenagers with their own daily preoccupations. But today's schoolchildren are tomorrow's bar and restaurant staff, hairdressers, traffic wardens, neighbours and community leaders. And dementia is a growing problem, touching increasing numbers of lives.
