A big thank you to Wendy who sent in this beautiful and touching poem written about her dad who has Alzheimer’s. Wendy told us many people have said they relate to the poem, and we know it will resonate with many of our supporters.

We watched Magnum and Quincy.

And I sat on your knee.

You watched me sing my angel solo.

Your eyes shone with glee.

You taught me right from wrong.

You always gave good advice.

And even when I hurt you.

You’ve been there all through my life.

You took me out to learn to drive.

Your nerves were shot.

You held me after my first heartbreak.

This I’ve never forgot.

That was the Dad I knew then.

The one who knew me too.

And now I see you look at me.

And you’re thinking ‘who are you?’

I walk into the house.

You know I’m a familiar face.

But the Dad who would converse with me.

Is now in this own little place.

You like to sleep a lot now.

And do your own little thing.

Hiding things and straightening things.

But at least we still hear you sing.

I miss the Dad I used to know.

Even though I know he’s still there.

Those smiling eyes and cheeky grin.

That show me you still care.

So, thank you Dad.

For making me the woman I am today.

And if only we could have that Dad back.

Before Alzheimer’s cruelly took him away.
