Last month, the Alzheimer’s Society People Awards took place. These awards are a chance to recognise and celebrate the incredible contributions our people make through their work and volunteering to provide help and hope for people living with dementia.
Were thrilled that amongst the winners were two incredible Dementia Friends Ambassadors, Jan Payne and Emily Wilson. Both of whom were nominated for their passion and dedication as Alzheimer’s Society volunteers.

Jan, who was a winner in the ‘Determined to make a difference’ category, began her journey with Dementia Friends in 2018. Since then, she has made remarkable strides, creating over 2,450 Dementia Friends — a significant achievement.
Jas Mahil, Dementia Friends Engagement Officer said: “Jan’s efforts have not only impacted the lives of those she has directly interacted with, but have also contributed to a broader understanding and awareness of dementia in her community.”
Jan said: “It means a huge amount. Not that I do what I do for awards - but the work being recognised is encouraging and this is as much for the lovely people I support as for me.
Locally my award has gone down rather well. I went to one dementia café on Saturday where I play the keyboard for the members to sing and they insisted on singing "Congratulations" to me and there was cake! Another overwhelming moment, in an overwhelming week!”
Emily, who won in the ‘Trusted expert’ category, became involved with Alzheimer’s Society when her late husband, Jim, was diagnosed with Lewy Body’s dementia in 2014. Emily is committed to making a difference in the fight against dementia, she has made hundreds of Dementia Friends, and her passion and knowledge make her a trusted expert within the volunteer fundraising team in Northern Ireland and beyond.
Emily said: “To be nominated with those you work alongside is amazing and shows much you are appreciated. Then to be short listed you realise how much time those who had nominated you must have spent in putting together the nomination form. I have been a finalist 3 times and this time to win was amazing, more than amazing.
But I couldn’t do what I do without the support of my family and the dedication and support from those that volunteer and work alongside me. Thank you so much for the recognition.”
A special well done and huge thank you to Rob Catlow, Dementia Friends Ambassador, who also received a nomination.
All of our winners and nominees are a testament to what a fantastic Dementia Friends community we have, and we couldn’t be more proud of their incredible achievements and their dedication to raising awareness and transforming the way the nation thinks, acts, and talks about dementia.
